Best of 2012

2012 was an interesting year for me, as you’ll see in the following selection of images. That’s it for the preface (exciting, eh?), now on to the images!

March 16, 2012 – Sebring International Raceway – Sebring, Florida

The IMSA GT3 Cup races were quite feisty. There were many fender benders and flat tires. But towards the end of the day’s 1st race, a flat tire led to a loss of control for Wayne Ducote and his GT3 Cup machine careened into the tire barrier directly in front of me. He walked away unhurt.

The view of the Norwegian fjords between Fauske and Bødø, Norway from the train. One of the most gorgeous rides on the planet. And this was just for starters…

June 1, 2012 – Lille Molle, Lofoten, Norway from on-board the car ferry VÃ¥gan

Our ultimate destination was a village out on the remote Lofoten Islands, but my father and I hadn’t figured out this part of the journey until we had already gotten up there. The obvious route is to take the ferry from Bødø to Moskenes. Unfortunately, this boat is almost always full with delivery trucks and we soon learned that we would not be able to use it. Luckily, I found a 2nd ferry route about half-way up the road to Narvik in the small town Skutvik. It was out of the way. It was perfect.

After stopping by the island fishing village Skrova, we made our way along the coast of the Lofoten Islands, and this is one of them. The entire chain was covered in low-hanging clouds. A veritable Middle Earth.

June 2, 2012 – Gimsøystraumen, VestvÃ¥gøy, Norway

June 4, 2012 – Overnight train between Kiruna and Stockholm, Sweden

After an hour or two on the train to the south, the moon began to rise. I spent over an hour trying to get shots of it. This was the result.

June 7, 2012 – Riddarholmskyrkan – Stockholm, Sweden

June 30, 2012 – Eldersburg, Maryland

To get this image, I had never been in more danger in my life. This was the evening of the now-infamous ‘Derecho’ that swept across the eastern US on that day. I had gone out that evening on the idea that it was just a line of thunderstorms. But it soon turned into a bit more than that. I set up near my apartment at an overlook. That yielded a few ok shots, but as the storms intensified I became alarmed at the damage that was being done. My route home soon became blocked by numerous fallen trees, so I had to find a different way home. A few minutes later, I had to seek refuge off the main road on a boat ramp. The lightning became concentrated on a point directly in front of me, so I began taking a series of timed exposures. Voila!

Brandon from DuClaw Brewing Co. and Steve from Pratt St. enjoy the aroma from their foolhardy attempt to muddle a pound of Juniper Berries with a single Mortar and Pestle. This eventually ended up with Brandon smashing the berries with a large Ash Mallet down in the brewery. The smell was divine. The beer was exquisite.
